Vooduu World: All about Ese & The Vooduu People
Born and raised in South London, Ese Okorodudu has seen it all, she's done most of it, and is now an authentic musician now based in Brixton.
Graduating from London’s most demanding performing arts school — the streets, as a busker — singer-songwriter Ese (vocals, guitar) is backed by the incendiary Vooduu People: ex-Noisette Pharoah Russell (drums), Basile Petite (bass) and – since June 2018 – Destra Orsheena (”Sheena”) Ross on backing vocals. Keyboardist Jackson Baird has joined the core quartet as a regular collaborator.
A fiery, sensitive, poetic songwriter, Ese is also what renowned hip hop engineer/producer/beatmaster Jay Burnett (Beastie Boys, Run DMC, LL Cool J, Afrika Bambaataa etc) describes as “the best natural singer I’ve heard in 30 years”. She and her band are inspired by a range of legends, from Jimi Hendrix to Amy Winehouse, via Bowie, Prince, Skunk Anansie and Erykah Badu.
A killer live act, they are signed to Quadrafon Music Industries and have recorded two singles, “Dynamite” and “Fairytale” (both 2017) with the aforementioned Burnett producing.
The “Dynamite EP” was released digitally and on CD in January 2018, with Jay Burnett’s recording of the band’s first-ever gig with this line-up released as “The Bootleg Series Volume 1” following in April ’18.
A third single, a live version of “Up In Smoke” recorded at the 414 Club in Brixton by Jay Burnett, was released in the late summer as a high-quality digital download on Bandcamp and on streaming sites.
Work on the debut album, this time with producer/Gearbox Records founder Darrel Sheinman at the controls, was completed in late August 2018. Recorded entirely in the analogue domain and mastered by Caspar Sutton-Jones, the album – “Up In Smoke” – was released in May 2019 on limited edition, hand-numbered vinyl LP (a CD version, with different artwork and a bonus track followed in June ‘19) and as a high-resolution download. The album, with photography by legendary lensman Kevin Cummins, received glowing reviews from the music press, fans and famous admirers such as Iggy Pop, Jools Holland and Cerys Matthews.
Two singles - fan favourite “Silver Spoon” and the uplifting ballad “Keep On” – have so far been released from the album, with a third mooted for Summer 2019. The remainder of the year will be spent gigging and preparing for recording of the second album.
